Overview
Find out how to access your UC San Diego email on the web.
UC San Diego provides two different ways of accessing your email. Most of students will be accessing their email through Gmail while most of the staff will be using Outlook. Before you begin, it is important to know if you should be checking your email through Gmail or Outlook. If you do not know, please contact your HR or supervisor to confirm.
If you are part of UC San Diego Health, email will be accessed on hsemail.ucsd.edu. For more assistance with your Health email, contact Health IS at (619) 543-4357 (x3HELP) or via email at 3help@ucsd.edu.
Critical Concepts
- To log in, you will need:
- Verify if you should be using Gmail or Outlook
- If you are a student, you will be using Gmail.
- Staff will be using Outlook, unless otherwise informed. If you are unsure, please contact your supervisor or HR.
- Username (full and official UCSD e-mail address): username@ucsd.edu
- Password: Your Active Directory (AD) password
- IIf you are an incoming student and have not set up your account, follow the instructions to Activate and Access your New Student Account.
Steps to Take
Gmail
- From a web browser (such as Chrome, Explorer, Firefox, or Safari), go to UC San Diego Gmail Sign in page (gmail.ucsd.edu).
- You will be redirected to a UC San Diego single sign-in page. Sign in with your UCSD email address and your UCSD password.
- Next, you will be prompted for your Two-Step Login.
- You should now be logged into your Gmail!
- If you receive an error when signing in indicating that you do not have access to Gmail, your account may not be provisioned for Gmail. Please use the Outlook email procedures below before contacting the ITS Service Desk.

Outlook
- Go to Outlook email sign-in (Outlook.com).
- Type in your UCSD email address on the "Sign In" page.
- You will be redirected to a UC San Diego login page. Enter your username and password.
- Click "Sign In."
- You will be prompted for Duo two step. Approve your Duo authentication on your phone or other device you've set up.
- You should now be logged into your Outlook email!
- If you get an error at log in that states "Something went wrong", it means you do not log in via Outlook. Try the Gmail options above before calling the ITS Service Desk.
